BACKYARD CAMPING

A boy putting up his tent.

A great solution for family fun all year round

Since the pandemic started travel was disrupted. We are still staying close to home because the uncertainty of new variants cropping up, higher gas prices and we’re watching our cash a little bit closer. You may be tired of staying home but sometimes home is the best place to be, just get creative and you can have a lot of fun.

When I was a kid, my family would go camping at least once every summer or on a 3-day holiday weekend, but when we couldn’t get to a campground, we made up for it in the backyard. My parents would let us sleep outside with a blanket draped over the clothesline for a tent.

You can bring back that childhood fun using your imagination by camping in your backyard. Call it a staycation, glamping, home-cation but it’s just a chance to have plain ole family fun. You can spend as much or as little as you want to enhance your experience, but a lot of fun is to be had. Camping in your backyard is something you can do all summer long. If you make your purchases at the beginning of summer your dollar will go a lot further.

Sleeping (Tent, mats and sleeping bags)

The first thing you’ll need to think about what you’re going to sleep in. I think no matter where you live in the country you need to have a tent. I grew up using Coleman products. They offer a variety of options and sizes.   Make sure its durable and if you live on the east coast or colder climates make sure it’s weatherproofed like the Coleman cabin tent that only takes 60 seconds to set up. If you’ve got a bigger group, try the GONEX family tent.

You will need something to sleep on.  3 Seasons sleeping bag and REVALCAMP sleeping foam offers some great options. The kids can probably take sleeping on the ground, but adults may prefer a little cushion.  Grab those ProSource foam tile floor play mats from your kids’ room or play floor. I love it when I can find more than one used for a specific item. If you don’t have those foam tiles a yoga or exercise mat will work just as well. You could even pile some extra blankets on the floor.
